Weight Loss Eliminates Diabetes Symptoms

New research has suggested that in eight of ten patients having surgery to reduce weight leads to elimination of diabetes symptoms. It was claimed that different types of surgeries such as Gastric Bypass, inserting gastric bands and stomach stapling drastically reduce the number of patients displaying obvious signs of Type 2 diabetes or it improved their condition. Overall, 78.1%of diabetic patients had complete resolution or 86.6% either improved or resolved.
Patients also lost on average 38.5Kg (85Lbs) in weight after surgery, this represents 55.9% of their excess weight. Although the data presents good results it must be remembered that these types of surgeries, like any other surgeries do carry risks. Whilst the Type 2 diabetes may have been resolved, this does not mean it has been cured and therefore there is still a need to eat a healthy balanced diet and be physically active to manage the diabetes. There are 2.25 million people with Type 2 diabetes in Britain and other 500,000 are thought to be undiagnosed. In 2007/2008, 2724 people were diagnosed as being obese and were referred to NHS hospitals for bariatric surgery showing an increase of 40% from the previous year.
